WHAT DOES HAIL DAMAGE LOOK LIKE ON MY ROOF SHINGLES?

Hail damage on roof shingles can look like a variety of things, depending on the size and severity of the hailstorm. Here are some of the most common signs of hail damage to shingles:

  • Dents or dings: Hailstones can cause dents or dings in shingles, which may be black in color.
  • Loss of granules: The granules on asphalt shingles help to protect them from the elements. If a hailstorm knocks off some of the granules, the shingles will be more susceptible to damage from the sun, wind, and rain.
  • Shiny patches: The asphalt on shingles can become shiny after being hit by hail. This is because the hailstones knock off some of the granules, exposing the shiny asphalt underneath.
  • Soft spots: If a hailstone hits a shingle hard enough, it can cause the shingle to become soft or even break.
  • Cracks: Hailstones can also cause cracks in shingles. These cracks may be small or large, and they can extend all the way through the shingle.

If you see any of these signs of hail damage on your roof shingles, it’s important to have your roof inspected by a qualified roofing contractor. They will be able to assess the extent of the damage and recommend the best course of action.

Here are some additional tips for identifying hail damage to your roof shingles:

  • Look for damage in random areas of the roof. Hail damage is usually not evenly distributed, so you’ll likely see it in different places.
  • Compare the appearance of your shingles to the appearance of undamaged shingles. This will help you to identify any shingles that have been damaged.
  • Look for damage to other roofing components, such as flashing, gutters, and skylights. Hail can also damage these components, so it’s important to inspect them as well.

If you’re unsure whether or not your roof has hail damage, it’s always best to have it inspected by a qualified roofing contractor. They will be able to tell you for sure whether or not your roof needs repairs.
